A Babylon For Webmasters

Welcome to Babylon! My name's Laurence and my quest is to become a webmaster. My tool is good old Notepad and the product of all my Internet knowledge, is in this site. I'm going to learn everything HTML 4.0 and its little friends have to offer. I've made the source code to each page really easy to understand. You're welcome to steal any bit you please ;)

FrontPage To Notepad ?!

Until now, I've relied on Microsoft FrontPage 98 to create my websites. As I learnt more about FrontPage, I realised how little I knew about HTML. FrontPage (as with all WYSIWYG Web Authoring packages) is nice to you. Too nice I discovered. It was protecting me from all that nasty code.

I've been into programming for over a decade now, so it perhaps seems strange in hindsight that I've relied on FrontPage for so long. I guess I was lulled by all the media attention (we're ALL guilty of it). The comments from the press are numerous and always in favour of WYSIWYG. The general gist of the opinions and my opinion to each, is as follows :

Hallelujah!

The first time I decided to open Notepad and create an HTML document was just for the hell of it. When I saved it as an '.html' file and executed it in Explorer it was like a some kind of religious experience.

And to put the final nail in the WYSIWYG coffin, I became very intrigued with Cascading Style Sheets (the most perfect creation known to man). After I had learnt every feature of these little cascading beauties, I decided to integrate them into my website ...

... Only to discover that my lovely little WYSIWYG editor decided it knew better and continued to remove my style tags.

One uninstall later, I opened my faithful Notepad and sat down to create this site. The rest - as they say - is history.

Why not join me on my journey, you too can become a webmaster ... With a little help ;)

Please Note : If you're not looking at this site with Internet Explorer 4 or 5 it will look very weird. Do yourself a favour and get a decent browser. I'll be writing an article sometime soon on why Netscape are going to have to sort their act out.
